Blogging: An Affiliate Marketing Essential

I receive a lot of phone calls and e-mails from new affiliates asking for tips on how they can earn more commissions. I usually start off by asking them what they are currently doing to market and sell our products and am often shocked that one of the last things they mention is a blog.
If you don’t have a blog yet, the purpose of this article is to encourage you set one up and use it. Absolutely every affiliate should have a blog. It’s just that simple. If you do not have a blog, I don’t know how much money you are missing out on.

Why Blogs?

Blogs allow you to get natural search traffic. For those who may not understand what natural search traffic is, it’s having your page highly ranked by the search engines when people search for various keywords. For example if you go to Google and search for “making money online” you will see a list of sites come up related to that keyword phrase. How cool would it be to have one of your sites or your blog on the first page of Google for that keyword phrase?
Google and the other search engines love blogs because the content is updated continuously. Your posts don’t have to be long, but when you update your blog often, your chances of moving up in the natural rankings increase.
Let me share an experience with you about the power of blogging. Not long ago, Chris Sandberg, the SEO expert in our office at the time, called me into his office for a little chat. I wasn’t sure what to expect as Chris isn’t one of the most social people in our office. He said we were ranked number one in Google for the keywords “Affiliate Marketing Rocks.”
He then explained that my blog post from about four months earlier was number one in Google.  I couldn’t believe it! I had simply used “Affiliate Marketing Rocks” in the title of my blog post, and didn’t think anything of it. I had continued the rest of that post by talking about the advantages of becoming one of our affiliates, and encouraging our affiliates to continue promoting our products.
About a week later I went to Google and checked to see if I was still number one. When I searched for the exact term, “Affiliate Marketing Rocks,” I had dropped to number two. So I posted again to my blog talking about the importance of blogs, and how you can get great natural traffic as a result.
I just checked as I began writing this article and saw that my blog posts are now ranked number one and two in Google for “Affiliate Marketing Rocks.” Isn’t that crazy? Again, this was not intentional. I was just blogging about affiliate marketing. I am now more aware of my blog titles and posts. I want to blog about specific affiliate related topics, so that I can get my posts indexed for those respective keywords.
Think about your potential blog. How powerful would it be if you could show up on the first page of Google for different products that you promote as an affiliate? I bet you could get some huge commission checks just by blogging and getting natural traffic.
Remember that some keywords will be more difficult than others to get indexed on the first page for, so don’t be afraid to be original in your posts.

Benefits to Blogging Beyond Natural Search Traffic

Our top affiliates have two things in common. They all have an e-mail list and they all have a blog. This is why I train so often about building a list and getting your affiliate blog up and going on my weekly affiliate training shows.
Almost a year ago, I received an email from an affiliate. I believe his blog was ranked number one in Google for the keyword “Russell Brunson” at the time. I just checked and it looks like it is now number ten for the keyword “Russell Brunson.” This affiliate’s name is Antone and he has built a good relationship with Russell and our team here at DotComSecrets.com.
It all started from his blog. He caught our attention by beating Russell out of the number one spot for his own name. Pretty cool.
From my continued efforts to update our affiliate blog, I have been able to increase the number of affiliates in our program. I know blogs work! This is just one small example of the power of blogs.

Setting Up Your Own Powerful Affiliate Blog

Sites such as WordPress, Joomla, and Blogger all offer free blogs. They are simple to set up and you can customize your templates to change the look of your blog.
My affiliate blog at TheSecondTier.com is set up through WordPress and it’s easy to use. My wife uses blogger for our family blog and loves it. She posts updates so that our loved ones can stay better connected to us.
The benefits of blogging are numerous, and it depends on your purpose. My wife’s blog shrinks the distance between our family and friends. As an affiliate manager, I am getting more and more affiliates to see our pages and sign up as affiliates.

For you, I think the benefits are obvious. Sell products. By offering a product review blog for example you can make tremendous commissions just reviewing different products.  Heck, some review blogs allow for their guests to vote on products – giving you extra social proof on your recommendations.

Super Affiliate Blogging Secrets

For those of you who are still not totally convinced on getting an affiliate blog set up, go look at these two blogs:
I heard John Chow speak on a panel at Affiliate Summit in Las Vegas this year. He writes articles on his blog and reviews products. He makes so much money that he actually blogs about it every month. He has sponsors on his blog who give him money, and he recommends products that he gets paid commissions for.
Zac Johnson is another great blogger who makes hundreds of thousands of dollars with his blog. He does things similar to John Chow. They are now asked to speak at affiliate related events all over the world as a result of their success in blogging. Both of these affiliates are making a tremendous amount of money every month. It could be you!
Blogs not only help you sell products but they also help you build a tremendous group following. People will come to your blogs over and over as long as you update it often and offer creative content. Like any business, internet marketing relies on building relationships with customers. Blogs are essentially an online journal. You can update your fans about events that you are attending, or products that you are having success with.
Blogs create a community of like-minded individuals where they can congregate and comment on blog posts and on each other’s comments. They provide a sense of history where visitors can go back months and years and see what products you promoted and for whom.
As people get sucked into blogs, they can go back and buy products that you promoted previously and still receive commissions years later. You work once, and get paid for it over and over again.
There are so many ways to monetize your blog. I mentioned earlier about having a review site, or you can sell ad space as your blog becomes more popular. The possibilities are endless.
I use our affiliate blog to communicate on a different level with our affiliates. I usually update my blog, and then email our affiliates directing them back to my post. This works well, as it trains our affiliates to go to my blog for updated information.
The more traffic I get to the blog, the better my rankings in the search engine. Again, everyone reading this should or better yet, must have a blog if you want to be successful on the internet. I challenge you to get a blog up because I know that it will make a big difference in your online business.
